“Androgyny is the prime inspiration for my personal style and it sets me apart from other stylists and bloggers.”

Dylan James (@DylannJamess) describes himself as fortunate to have his passion for styling as his career here in Boston. Originally from rural Maine, Dylan has transitioned quite easily into his work as a sales consultant for Coach’s Faneuil Hall location. He has fun when he works, something that many people can envy, and reveals that being surrounded by garments rejuvenates his inspiration for styling.

What got you started on blogging?
I launched Modern Garçonne on April 20, 2013, so it has not been long since I started blogging. The Boston fashion industry is not as dominant as other major cities, and there are very few local fashion bloggers. I wanted to create a way for men and women to see my interpretations of styling and how they can be used in everyday life.

Where does the name ‘Modern Garçonne’ come from?
A few months ago I was reading Harper’s Bazaar, and the term ‘modern garçonne’ was used to describe a masculine style that was a big trend for women. I did some research and found that the French used this term to signify boyishly dressed women. Androgyny is the prime inspiration for my personal style and it sets me apart from other stylists and bloggers.

I often receive looks of confusion for my appearance from strangers, so this is the chance for those strangers to understand my point of view.

What are your 3 top style tips?

1. Keep it simple. Even if a person has an entire wardrobe filled with the best statement pieces, it does not mean they should all be worn at once. Editing is key.

2. Confidence is the best accessory. You need to get dressed for you. Who cares what other people think?

People are told that they need to feel comfortable in their own skin. You need to feel comfortable in your own textiles too.

3. Plan your wardrobe. One day you are dressed for business, the next you’re dressed for a rock concert. Figure out what you want your style to say about you and follow the same aesthetic. Be consistent and make your own image.

Do you have a most admired style icon?
Without a doubt, Rachel Zoe. Regarding personal styles, our aesthetics are extremely similar. She keeps it simple and comfortable, but wears the perfect staple pieces to bring an outfit together. Not to mention that I could not survive a day, rain or shine, without my ‘sunnies.’

I die.

The most worn items in your wardrobe are …
I have a pair of Aldo leather combat boots that I have had for two years. They are distressed to the max, but they make any and every outfit that I’ve worn look dope. My Tom Ford sunglasses were my first luxury designer piece in my wardrobe. The frames are the perfect size for my face and they’re jet black, enough said.

Where do you hope fashion styling takes you? Give me your dream scenario.
Over time I will do more work with personal clients either for events or as a personal shopper. But I get the most pleasure from styling photo shoots.

I love the idea that an outfit change or even adding an accessory can change the entire theme of a photo.

In the future I would love to work with designers for ad campaigns and lookbooks for their collections.

What’s something you’re looking forward to Instagraming right now?
I live in skinny jeans, but I have been on the search for an oversized pair of pants to try out a new proportion. Very recently I got a pair of Callulla Liilibelle high-waisted knit pants that were worn this year at Lincoln Center for Fashion Week.

I don’t remember the last time I wore such a bright color,

so I’m excited to try something new and post a fun resort look.
